STATENS MUSIKVERK gets a Director General
STINAWESTERBERG.jpg
2011.02.19

IMPRA's board members Karin Inde and Lina Nyberg, along with many others, were heavily involved in the autumn of 2010 for how the Statens Musikverk's design was planned. The Statens Musikverk takes over part of the budget that the now closed National Concerts had, 25 million. These should belong to the free musical life, it has been said.

Now a general manager, Stina Westerberg, has been appointed. A polished person with a background as a musician – IMPRA congratulates the government on a good choice!

GALA PREMIERE 2 APRIL AT 7 PM AT THEATER STUDIO LEDERMAN

ELDBJØRG RAKNES/FREDRIK LJUNGKVIST DUO (NO/SE)

YOUR FRIENDS' FRIENDS (SE/NO/DK)

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

This evening you will hear the acclaimed Norwegian singer and composer Eldbjörg Raknes in a duo put together for this special occasion with one of Sweden's most noted saxophonists, Fredrik Ljungkvist.

Eldbjørg Raknes, born in Raknes on an island outside Molde, is one of the most noted musicians in Norway today. She has received a lot of attention for her latest solo record "Sense" (2010):
“Raknes uses the voice as an instrument and bends and twists it in a way most of us have never experienced. She challenges both herself and us in a way that is designed to broaden the horizon.” Nettavisen side2.no
"Each new listen reveals more colors and nuances in Rakne's masterful singing. More sounds emerge, lasting and lingering in the memory.” AllAboutJazz about latest album "Sense"
www.eldbjorgraknes.com

Over the years, Fredrik Ljungkvist has established himself as one of Sweden's greats in the field of improvisation. His completely unique musical language and expression have attracted attention on the big stages around the world. From the motivation when he was nominated for DN's culture award in 2010:
"Ljungkvist has several groups of his own, and also plays with Swedish-Norwegian Atomic - the, according to many critics, even in the USA, perhaps the most relevant jazz band in the world today. … With his finely honed playing technique, unbridled creativity and ability to be completely at one with himself and his instrument, he is downright impossible to overlook on the international stage.”

LUPiNO Live presents SIDSEL ENDRESEN
and POMBO September 7
SIDSEL.jpg
2011.09.11

LUPiNO LiVE kicks off the autumn program on September 7 at Fasching (Stockholm). Then we have the honor to present: SIDSEL ENDRESEN
Norwegian singer, composer, poet, bandleader

With four Norwegian Grammys, two solo albums on ECM and a total of 16 album releases, Sidsel Endersen has been at the forefront of the Norwegian scene. And she has done that for the past 30 years. Her repertoire has ranged from fusion and jazz-rock in the 80s, to chamber jazz in the 90s and now in the new millennium we hear her free improvisations.

The voice is her solo instrument and with her distinctive improvisational style she challenges the traditional role of a singer.

IMPRA GOLD
– a new honorary award!
OLD GOLD.jpg
2011.09.19

IMPRA GOLD – a new honorary award

The association IMPRA works for an equal climate in the world of jazz and improvisation. Since the association was founded in 2005, IMPRA has mapped and promoted female musicians. IMPRA has informed and made jazz clubs and festival organizers aware of the importance of achieving gender equality in programming, as well as further training music educators in how to create a gender-neutral playing space in their teaching where everyone gets the same chance and place.

Now comes the next project: IMPRA GOLD - an honorary award to an organizer who has shown during the year that they want to change and actively work for an equal jazz Sweden. IMPRA runs three clubs in the cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö where bookings are made based on a simple rule: the bands must contain at least one woman. Female artistic directors and female instrumentalists are especially welcome as it is mainly them that we lack in the programs of other jazz clubs. IMPRA wants to see a similar awareness and aspiration among the organizers in Sweden, and with IMPRA GOLD wants to encourage, inspire and support the clubs that choose to work based on similar principles.

What does it mean to win IMPRA GOLD?

IMPRA GOLD will be awarded at the Swedish Jazz Celebration, where the winning club or organizer will receive a diploma and the IMPRA GOLD walking prize. Winning IMPRA GOLD primarily means increased marketing and positive attention in the media. In addition to a prestigious label as an equal club, the designation can thus generate a larger audience and a more favorable position when, for example, applications for municipal support.

Nomination

Nominate your club or event by December 15. The winner will be announced at the end of February 2012 and the prize will then be awarded during the Swedish Jazz Celebration in Stockholm. Go to impra.se/impra-guld and follow the instructions. IMPRA wants, among other things, to see the club's program for spring 2012, as well as a justification containing a description of what your work for gender equality looks like.

LUPiNO LiVE proudly presents:
NORMA WINSTONE TRIO and CECILIA PERSSON SOLO
In the Auditorium, Kulturhuset (Sthlm) 17 November at 19.00

Norma Winstone is one of the great vocalists and lyricists of European jazz. She has been on the jazz scene since the 60s and still maintains a brilliant creative career.

Norma performs with her latest project with German saxophonist and clarinetist Klaus Gesing and Italian pianist Glauco Venier. The Grammy-nominated trio has released two albums on the legendary ECM label. Their exquisite program includes songs from Cole Porter to Peter Gabriel, and the band's own compositions inspired by calypso, Coltrane, Satie, folk songs and Pasolini.

".. a one-of-a-kind singer blessed with an ear nonpareil... tones so pure, phrasing so unique and captivating, as to make each song an aural adventure." / The Scanner, Portland, Oregon

"Right now, she is at the peak of her form...there is no jazz singer in the country to touch her." / The Times, London

"Norma Winstone's instrument: an unfettered intelligence spinning tales with language...or without" / Down Beat Magazine

The evening begins with a solo concert by the pianist Cecilia Persson, who received the Sthlm Jazz Fest Prize in 2011 because she "is an imaginative pianist and an unusually responsive accompanist who, with her stubbornness, sets the tone in all the contexts in which she appears."

Entrance this evening is SEK 160 regular, SEK 80 if you are under 18 and as usual - FREE - if you are a member of Impra!
LUPiNO LiVE #4 presents Duo Milla Viljamaa & Johanna Juhola + King and Queen of Sweden
MILLAJOHANNA.jpg
2011.11.27

The last LUPiNO LiVE of the year has the great pleasure of presenting two fantastic acts.

Duo Milla Viljamaa & Johanna Juhola
The Finnish duo Milla Viljamaa (piano) & Johanna Juhola (accordion) is a duo that plays their own music, but also songs by Astor Piazzolla. They are strongly influenced by tango nuevo but are also influenced by jazz and folk music from different countries. Their debut album "Piazzolla Passage" was released in 2002 and was warmly received by both critics and audiences. In 2007 came the second album, "Mi Retorno", which was nominated for ethnic music album of the year at the Finnish Emma gala.

King and Queen of Sweden
Erika Angell (Thus:Owls, The Moth, Josef & Erika) moves freely on Swedish and international stages for rock, pop, jazz and experimental music. Erika and Simon Angell, from Montreal, Canada, met about four years ago at Paradiso in Amsterdam, with the consequence that today they live with one foot on each side of the Atlantic. Simon (Patrick Watson, Thus:Owls) is a well-known voice on the Canadian and European music scene with his avant-garde, pop-experimental guitar playing. For the first time they will appear as a duo under the name King and Queen of Sweden. Something you don't want to miss!
